Venezuela: its flag

First raised by Francisco de Miranda in 1806, the yellow, blue and red tricolour became independent Venezuela’s flag in 1811; it shares these colours, in the same order, with Colombia and Ecuador, all descended from the flag of Gran Colombia.

The seven stars first honoured the seven provinces that signed the 1811 declaration of independence; an eighth, called for as early as 1817 by Simón Bolívar for the province of Guayana, was only added in 2006.
