Adopted at independence from the Netherlands in 1975, the Surinamese flag stacks five bands, green and white framing a broad central red one, whose colours stand for hope and fertility, justice and freedom, then progress and love of country.
The five-pointed yellow star, known as the Star of Unity, at the centre of the flag symbolises the union of the country's different communities, Creole, Hindustani, Javanese, Maroon and Amerindian, and the golden future they are building together.
