Uruguay at a glance: its flag, its capital Montevideo, its population and where it sits on the world map. Plus a way to test yourself afterwards.
Adopted in 1830, the flag reuses the Sun of May from the Argentine flag, a sun with a human face said to have broken through the clouds over Buenos Aires during the demonstrations of the May Revolution of 1810 against the Spanish crown.
The nine horizontal white and blue stripes originally represented the nine historical departments of the young Oriental Republic of Uruguay.
