Spain: its flag

Chosen in 1785 by King Charles III so the Spanish navy would stand out at a distance from other European ensigns, which were often red or white, the flag combines red and yellow, the “rojigualda”.

The coat of arms, set on the hoist side, brings together the symbols of the former kingdoms of Castile, León, Aragon and Navarre, along with the Pillars of Hercules and the motto “Plus Ultra”.
