Just two bands, blue over yellow, usually read as a summer sky above a field of ripe wheat. The origin is in fact heraldic: the blue and gold arms of the principality of Galicia-Volhynia.
Adopted in 1918 by the short-lived Ukrainian People’s Republic and banned throughout the Soviet period, it became the official flag again in 1991, at independence.
