The blue-yellow-red vertical tricolour spread from 1866: blue and red come from France, yellow and red from Spain, reflecting the joint rule exercised over the principality by the Bishop of Urgell and the Count of Foix since 1278.
The coat of arms at its centre combines the emblems of the two co-princes (the bishop's mitre, the count's staffs) with those of Catalonia and Béarn linked to them, under the motto "Virtus Unita Fortior"; its current form was fixed in 1993, when Andorra adopted its first constitution.
