Austria at a glance: its flag, its capital Vienna, its population and where it sits on the world map. Plus a way to test yourself afterwards.
Austria’s red-white-red is one of Europe’s oldest emblems: legend credits it to Duke Leopold V, whose white surcoat is said to have come out of the 1191 siege of Acre soaked in blood, except under his belt.
Borne as arms first by the Babenbergs and then by the Habsburgs, the three bands only became the national flag in 1918, at the birth of the republic.
