Albania: its flag

The red flag with the black double-headed eagle revives the personal standard of Gjergj Kastrioti, known as Skanderbeg, who united Albanian lords against the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century; the two-headed eagle, of Byzantine origin, was raised at independence on 28 November 1912 by Ismail Qemali.

A red star edged in yellow was added above the eagle under the communist regime, before being removed in 1992: the flag has kept its original form, without the star, since 1993.
