Bulgaria at a glance: its flag, its capital Sofia, its population and where it sits on the world map. Plus a way to test yourself afterwards.
The white-green-red tricolour was adopted in 1878, when the Principality of Bulgaria was created after the Russo-Turkish War and the Treaty of San Stefano ended five centuries of Ottoman rule; it drew on the Pan-Slavic Russian flag, with green replacing blue.
White evokes peace and purity, green the country's agricultural wealth, red the courage and blood shed for independence; a communist emblem adorned the canton from 1946 to 1990, before being removed with the return to democracy.
