Adopted at independence in 1830, the vertical black-yellow-red tricolour takes its colours from the coat of arms of the Duchy of Brabant: a black lion with red claws and tongue on a gold field.
The order of the stripes varied in the early years before settling for good, with the black stripe always kept at the hoist.
