The green-white-red tricolour already existed under the Qajars and then the Pahlavis, but the central emblem and inscriptions of Iran’s current flag were only adopted on 9 May 1980, after the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
The red emblem, designed by Hamid Nadimi from four stylised crescents and a sword, is said to spell out the word “Allah” while also evoking a tulip, a flower linked to martyrdom in Iran; the phrase “Allahu Akbar” (God is greatest) repeats twenty-two times along the bands, echoing 22 Bahman, the day the revolution triumphed.
