Blue, yellow and red go back to the revolution of 1848; the vertical layout was fixed in 1867, and the flag took its final form in December 1989, when protesters cut the communist emblem out of its centre.
Blue and red come from the arms of the former principality of Moldavia, yellow and red from those of Wallachia, united in 1859; neighbouring Moldova’s flag reuses this same tricolour, completed with its own coat of arms.
