The red, white and blue tricolour goes back to 1848 and the pan-Slavic movement, but it was only on 21 December 1990, after the first multi-party elections, that the chequered coat of arms was added at its centre, replacing the communist star of the Yugoslav era.
The red-and-white chequered shield, the "šahovnica", is topped by a crown of five smaller shields summarising the country's history: ancient Croatia, Dubrovnik, Dalmatia, Istria and Slavonia.
