This flag reuses the banner given in 1941 by King Sobhuza II to the Swazi Pioneer Corps, which served alongside the Allies in Italy; first hoisted as the national flag on 25 April 1967, it was left unchanged when the country was renamed from Swaziland to Eswatini in 2018.
At its centre sits a black-and-white ox-hide shield, traditionally carried into battle, paired with a spear and a staff decorated with feathers; black and white symbolise the peaceful coexistence of the country's communities, and only the king may carry the weapons it depicts.
