Libya: its flag

Adopted on 3 August 2011 by the National Transitional Council during the civil war, Libya’s flag revives that of King Idris I’s kingdom (1951–1969), set aside in 1977 for Gaddafi’s plain green flag.

Red recalls the blood shed for independence, black the years of occupation, green agriculture and Islam; the white crescent and star, placed within the black band, are traditional symbols of the Muslim world.
