Burkina Faso: its flag

Adopted on 4 August 1984, exactly one year after Thomas Sankara came to power, this flag accompanied the country’s change of name: Upper Volta became Burkina Faso, “the land of upright people.”

Red and green, pan-African colours drawn from Ethiopia’s, split the flag into two horizontal bands: red for the revolution and the blood shed for it, green for the country’s farming wealth. The five-pointed yellow star at the centre stands as the guiding light for the people’s march forward.
