Poland: its flag

White and red come from Poland’s coat of arms, a white eagle on a red field, a symbol used as early as the Piast era, the country’s first royal dynasty.

The flag itself was only made official in 1919, when independence returned after more than a century split between Russia, Prussia and Austria.
