Slovakia at a glance: its flag, its capital Bratislava, its population and where it sits on the world map. Plus a way to test yourself afterwards.
The white, blue and red tricolour is Pan-Slavic, but its resemblance to the Russian flag led Slovakia, in 1992, to add the national shield offset towards the hoist, a double patriarchal cross set on three blue hills.
This two-barred cross, borrowed from medieval heraldry, had already marked the kings of Hungary; the most common reading holds that the three hills stand for the Tatra, Fatra and Mátra ranges, the symbolic cradles of the Slovak nation.
