Sierra Leone at a glance: its flag, its capital Freetown, its population and where it sits on the world map. Plus a way to test yourself afterwards.
Adopted on 27 April 1961, the day of independence from the United Kingdom, Sierra Leone’s flag lines up three horizontal bands: green, white and blue.
Green stands for the country’s mountains and agriculture, white for unity and justice; blue is said to honour Freetown’s natural harbour, one of the largest in the world, which sheltered Allied convoys during the Second World War.
