Somalia: its flag

Adopted on 12 October 1954, under United Nations trusteeship, Somalia’s flag came from a design improvised overnight by the scholar Mohammed Awale Liban to break a deadlock between rival parties.

The sky blue draws on the flag of the UN; each of the five points on the white star is said to stand for a territory with a Somali population, of which only two went on to form the Somali Republic in 1960.
