South Sudan at a glance: its flag, its capital Juba, its population and where it sits on the world map. Plus a way to test yourself afterwards.
Adopted on 20 May 2005, this flag emerged from the peace agreement that ended the civil war with the North; it reused the flag of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement, before becoming the national flag at independence on 9 July 2011.
Black stands for the South Sudanese people, red for the blood shed for freedom, green for the farmland, and the blue triangle for the Nile that runs through the country; the gold star, called the Star of Bethlehem, guides the nation towards a bright future.
