Sudan: its flag

Adopted on 20 May 1970, after the coup that brought Gaafar Nimeiry to power, Sudan’s flag reuses the pan-Arab colours inherited from the 1916 Arab Revolt flag: red, white, black and green.

Red stands for the martyrs of independence, white for peace, black for the country itself — whose Arabic name means “land of the Blacks” — and for the 19th-century Mahdist revolt; the green triangle at the hoist evokes Islam and agriculture.
