Mali: its flag

Mali’s vertical green-yellow-red tricolour dates back to 1959, the year of the Mali Federation with Senegal: the central yellow band then carried a black kanaga, a stylised human figure with raised arms, borrowed from Dogon tradition.

When the federation broke up, that figure was dropped on 1 March 1961 so as not to offend religious sensitivities, leaving the plain flag flown today. Green stands for hope, yellow for purity and mineral wealth, red for the blood shed for independence.
