Turkmenistan at a glance: its flag, its capital Ashgabat, its population and where it sits on the world map. Plus a way to test yourself afterwards.
The red stripe near the hoist carries five guls, traditional carpet motifs each belonging to one of the country's five main tribes, whose textile craft is a source of national pride.
Below the guls, two crossed olive branches were added in 1997 in reference to the permanent neutrality proclaimed by Turkmenistan and recognised by the UN in 1995; the crescent and the five white stars on the green field, a colour associated with Islam, this time stand for the country's five provinces.
