Italy at a glance: its flag, its capital Rome, its population and where it sits on the world map. Plus a way to test yourself afterwards.
The Italian tricolour draws on the French flag, adapted as early as 1797 by the Cispadane Republic with green replacing blue, before becoming the flag of the Kingdom of Italy and then of the Republic in 1946.
Green, white and red have no single official meaning: they are often said to stand for hope, faith and charity, or for the uniform colours of the Milan militia that first carried this flag.
