Slovenia: its flag

The white, blue and red tricolour, inherited from the colours of Carniola and then the 19th-century Pan-Slavic movement, became the national flag at independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, completed with a shield placed near the hoist.

This blue shield carries the white peak of Triglav, the country's highest mountain and quintessential alpine symbol, two wavy blue lines evoking the Adriatic Sea and Slovenia's rivers, and three gold six-pointed stars taken from the medieval coat of arms of the Counts of Celje.
