Niger at a glance: its flag, its capital Niamey, its population and where it sits on the world map. Plus a way to test yourself afterwards.
Adopted on 23 November 1959, a year before independence, Niger’s flag stacks three horizontal bands, orange, white and green, a layout fairly close to that of neighbouring Ivory Coast.
Orange stands for the Saharan desert covering the country’s north, and for the sun; green for the vegetation along the Niger river and the savannas of the south. The orange disc at the centre of the white band represents that same sun and the independence regained.
