Chad at a glance: its flag, its capital N'Djamena, its population and where it sits on the world map. Plus a way to test yourself afterwards.
Adopted in November 1959, ahead of independence in 1960, Chad’s flag combines the blue of the French flag with the yellow and red of the pan-African colours.
Blue stands for the sky and hope, yellow for the sun and the desert, red for the blood shed for independence; the tricolour is nearly identical to Romania’s, so much so that Chad formally, if unsuccessfully, asked the UN to look into the matter in 2004.
