Zimbabwe: its flag

Adopted on 18 April 1980, the day of independence, Zimbabwe’s flag takes up the colours of ZANU-PF, the liberation movement turned ruling party: green, gold, red and black, the pan-African palette.

The white triangle stands for the peace won after the war, the red star for the revolutionary struggle; the golden bird above it reproduces a soapstone carving found at the Great Zimbabwe ruins, which gave the country its name.
