Burundi at a glance: its flag, its capital Gitega, its population and where it sits on the world map. Plus a way to test yourself afterwards.
Burundi’s current flag dates from 1967, five years after the 1962 independence: the diagonal white cross keeps the original design, but the royal drum, the karyenda, that once filled the central disc disappeared with the abolition of the monarchy in 1966.
Green stands for hope, white for peace, red for the blood shed during the struggle for independence; the three red stars edged in green, arranged in a triangle on the central disc, recall the national motto “Unity, Work, Progress”.
