Botswana: its flag

Adopted on 30 September 1966, the day of independence, the flag is credited to the British colonial administrator George Winstanley; it deliberately breaks with the pan-African red-yellow-green colours dominant elsewhere on the continent.

The sky blue recalls water and rain, a vital resource in the Kalahari desert and the theme of the national motto "Pula", while the black stripe bordered in white, evoking the zebra, symbolises racial harmony, in deliberate contrast with apartheid next door in South Africa.
