Zambia at a glance: its flag, its capital Lusaka, its population and where it sits on the world map. Plus a way to test yourself afterwards.
Adopted on 24 October 1964 at independence, Zambia’s flag was designed by artist Gabriel Ellison; unusually, its emblem sits at the fly rather than at the centre or the hoist.
Green stands for the country’s agriculture and vegetation; the red, black and orange stripes recall the struggle for freedom, the Zambian people and the nation’s copper wealth, while the soaring fish eagle symbolises the ability to rise above hardship.
