Angola: its flag

Adopted on 11 November 1975, the day Angola gained independence from Portugal, the flag reuses that of the MPLA: a red-and-black bicolour charged with a golden emblem, a star above a crossed half-cogwheel and machete.

Red stands for the blood shed during the liberation struggle, black for the African continent; the star, cogwheel and machete — a deliberate nod to the Soviet hammer and sickle — represent internationalism, industrial workers and peasants.
