Cameroon at a glance: its flag, its capital Yaoundé, its population and where it sits on the world map. Plus a way to test yourself afterwards.
Cameroon’s green, red and yellow flag dates from 20 May 1975, when the single yellow star at the centre of the red band replaced the two stars that had stood, since 1961, for the federation of French- and English-speaking Cameroon.
As in Ghana or Senegal, these pan-African colours come from Ethiopia’s flag: green stands for the southern forests, yellow for the sun and the northern savanna, red for unity; the star is officially known as the “star of unity”.
