Central African Republic at a glance: its flag, its capital Bangui, its population and where it sits on the world map. Plus a way to test yourself afterwards.
Designed by Barthélemy Boganda and adopted on 1 December 1958, this flag combines the blue and white of France with the green and yellow of Africa, joined by a vertical red stripe: “the symbol of our blood”, Boganda explained, “we shall shed it for Africa as we did when France was in danger”.
The yellow star in the blue canton, inherited from the emblem of the party Boganda founded, carries the hope of a shared future for both continents; the flag has not changed since, neither at full independence in 1960 nor under Bokassa’s Central African Empire.
