Adopted on 18 February 2006, when the new constitution took effect, the flag of the Democratic Republic of the Congo revives, with slight adjustments, the one flown between 1963 and 1971 and again from 1997 to 2006, between independence in 1960 and the Mobutu era.
The sky-blue field stands for peace, the yellow star for a radiant future; the diagonal red stripe, fringed in yellow, is said to recall the blood shed by the martyrs of independence, while the yellow border stands for the country’s prosperity.
