Uganda: its flag

Adopted on 9 October 1962, the day of independence, Uganda’s flag was designed by Grace Ibingira, the country’s Minister of Justice, who took the black, yellow and red of the Uganda People’s Congress and repeated them as six horizontal stripes.

Black stands for the Ugandan people, yellow for the African sun, red for brotherhood among all Africans; at the centre, the white disc bears the grey crowned crane, the country’s symbol since the days of the British protectorate, one leg raised as a sign of progress.
